Quality is a very important concern for me. That is why I grind and make
my own paints and wooden panels (made with rabbit-skin glue and gold plaster).
I also make my own varnish. Here are some pictures of me in my studio
grinding and mixing the paint I use. For protection against absorbing
color pigment through my skin pores when grinding and mixing paint I use
a barrier creme on my hands. The color I am making is yellow ochre. It
is a very important color in my work, along with flake white (a transparent
white used by the Renaissance Masters and not commonly used today) and
vermilion red. They form the base for the transparent skin tones used
in my portrait painting. By mixing and making my own paints and varnish
I am able to achieve a luminosity which is impossible to get with bought
products. With this procedure I can make exactly the correct texture,
not too shiny or too mat for my paintings. There is an immense satisfaction
for me in having a painting that is fully created by me, not just the
painting but the materials to do the painting as well. Below I am working
on a portrait using the paint I made above.
